Dodge Viper

An Unmistakable American Icon

Dodge Viper

Since the introduction of the first production Dodge Viper at the 1992 Detroit Auto Show, the Viper has caught the imagination of a niche group who wanted a sports car that wasn't a Corvette or Porsche. The first generation offered 400 horsepower from an 8.0-liter V-10 engine co-developed with Lamborghini. It had very few comforts including no exterior door handles. By the way, that first generation could beat the that year's Corvette or Porsche 911 Carrera 2 with a 0-60 time of 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 160 mph.

645 horsepower

Successive generations came in 1996, 2003, and 2008 with increasing horsepower and other improvements that led to the fifth generation introduced at the New York Auto Show as a 2013 model. It used the same V-10 but was boosted to 640 horses and 600 lb-ft of torque. It offered a new six-speed manual transmission, carbon-fiber and aluminum body panels, electronic stability control, and traction control. The additional power gave the Viper 0-60 times of 3.5 seconds and top speed exceeding 200 mph. In 2015 an additional boost in power resulted in a Viper with 645 horsepower.

Despite these improvements, the 2015 variant was getting close to the end. Dodge announced that the 2015 would be offered as a GTC model with bespoke options including 8,000 exterior colors, 24,000 hand-painted stripe options, 10 different wheel choices, six aerodynamic groups, and 16 interior trim packages. They planned to offer owners the chance to own a one-of-a-kind Viper unlike any others on the road. Unfortunately, it didn't help sales and Dodge announced the end of the model line in 2017 by offering six different models to celebrate the Viper's 25th anniversary. They included:

  • Dodge Dealer Edition ACR (American Club Racer)
  • Voodoo II Edition ACR
  • Snakeskin Edition ACR
  • Snakeskin Edition GTC
  • GTS-R Commemorative Edition ACR
  • Viper 1:28 Edition ACR
